FAQ

What is an Explosion Proof Vacuum?

An Explosion-Proof Vacuum System is a vacuum system that is capable of preventing the ignition of a specified gas or vapor and operates at such an external temperature that a surrounding flammable atmosphere will not be ignited.  A Nationally Recognized Testing Lab (NRTL) must certify that a vacuum system is explosion-proof.

Do I need an explosion-proof vacuum?

I have an ST1 XP dust. Our area is ORDLOC. Do I need a fully explosion-proof vacuum? This is at the discretion of your AHJ or EHS. A fully explosion-proof vacuum is a good option but not always the best option. You are fully covered in the event of airborne flammable vapors. But if you are just vacuuming an ST1 XP dust in an ordinary location, then in almost all instances, the AHJ will accept the NFPA 652 Vacuum as long as you can demonstrate it is static-free and complies with the seven criteria above.

Plus (click or tap to expand) + Our company did a Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) and we found out our dust has a low explosivity KST rating of under 100. Our area is ORDLOC, do we need a fully explosion proof vacuum?

This is up to the discretion of your EHS or AHJ. In almost all cases a NFPA 652 vacuum for ST1 dust in ORDLOC is all you need.

Plus (click or tap to expand) + Does your company sell fully explosion proof vacuums?

Yes. Everything from small portables for Class 1 all the way to 50HP trailer mount with explosion venting.  But we don't oversell someone a fully XP vacuum when all you really need is something that is NFPA 652 safe for ST1 dust in ORDLOC.

Plus (click or tap to expand) + I was told I need a vacuum for Class II, Division 1, Division 2, Groups F, G. What does that mean?

A "Vacuum for Class II, Division 1, Division 2, Groups F, G" refers to an explosion-proof vacuum cleaner specifically designed and certified for use in hazardous locations where combustible dusts like flour, grain, wood, plastic, and certain chemicals are present; meaning it can be used in areas classified as Class II, Division 1 and Division 2, with potential combustible dusts categorized under Groups F and G, according to NFPA standards. The AC 100 Z22 Air Powered is a top seller for these kinds of applications.
